GIOVANNI BISIGNANI
IATA DIRECTOR GENERAL AND CEO
“With global standards,
air transport has grown
into a mass transit system
used by 2.2 billion people
annually […] Passengers
are enjoying greater
convenience as the industry
reduces costs. IATA is now
looking to the next stage:
a global self-service strategy
to join the technology
elements into a seamless
process and a new
approach for baggage
management.”

A
irlines and airports have developed
intertwined processes, mixing
e-ticketing, self-service and
Internet-based services, with the dual aim
of r
educing distribution costs and facilitating
check-in and boarding.
A first generation of airport-operated fast
tracks has been successfully implemented
but process scalability and interoperability
remain largely elusive.
On the contrary, security and border control
agencies are mainly concerned with
probing each traveler's ID and luggage
contents, ignoring the impact of creating
additional queues.
They have two main objectives:
n
First, to ascertain the real ID of each
traveler and cross-check it against their
no-fly and other blacklists.
n
Second, to make sure that any boarding
passenger is the legitimate holder of his
seat, to prevent last minute ID substitution
before boarding.
With the globalization of air transportation,
there is a growing need to harmonize
facilitation and security pr
ocedur
es.
The new e-passport, now delivered by over
40 countries will bring additional security
via improved automated document
verification, as soon as the impending
e-passport reader infrastructure is deployed
in major countries' border control and
security check points.
Airport Access Control:
the dual objective
IER’
s solutions to improve facilitation
and security.
IER have participated in two noteworthy
automation-assisted access control
developments.
n
The first deals with secure boarding,
as an extension to earlier efforts undertaken
while developing the Quick Boarding Gate
reader with Lufthansa.
The QBGs now in full service are access
control portals used in parallel with manual
boarding, to automate boarding document
inspection by the DCS. Remote visual
supervision by one single agent over
several positions contributes to
the process economics.
n
The second area of development deals
with advanced automated border control.
Insofar as police and border control agencies
supervise, authorize and update a person’s
enrolment status into a passenger Fast
Track program, one is able to deploy man-
traps (airlocks) which allow for safe and fast
automated individual border crossing,
freeing security forces to perform more
intensive and efficient searches on other
travellers based on dif
fer
entiated risk
assessment.
This has been successfully tested at CDG
with “PEGASE”, a pr
ogram r
eser
ved to
Air France frequent flyers.

T
he Ticket Vending Machines will
be installed at Spain’s larger
stations. They are part of
the new automated ticketing services
deployed by Renfe in anticipation
of the implementation of the high
speed lines (AVE) to Barcelona,
Malaga and Valladolid.
The IER TVMs have been selected
by Siemens Renfe to introduce self-
service and provide passengers with
the ability to carry out numerous
operations by themselves: change
tickets for the same day, print boarding
passes, issue “Club AVE” tickets and
change seat selection…
Santiago Flores, Renfe IT Manager
says: “
With this introduction of self-
service, our main objective is to offer
our passengers a better and more
flexible commercial service by making
many operations easier while making
them secure thanks to the latest
technology used in the IER TVMs
”.
The IER TVMs include barcode
and contactless readers to process
all types of documents and cards
and also include a credit card payment
module. The IER TVMs are designed
for a maximum ease of use.
The height and reach of all user
interfaces are accessible to all pas-
sengers, including disabled persons.
Operations are made simple and fast
for the users.
For the operator, special care is given
to the security aspects with an anti-
vandalism touch screen as well as
alarm and built-in technical surveillance
devices. Once installed, the TVMs
will be maintained onsite by IER's
service teams.
Juan Carlos Perez Calleja, Siemens
Account Manager says: “
The IER TVM
technology and functionalities meet
every need expressed by Siemens
and Renfe. Moreover, our long-standing
and fruitful partnership with IER
in the air transportation market and
their large experience of the TVM
technology - they have already equip-
ped the French Railways (SNCF)
with over 1,500 TVMs - as well as
the high quality of the service
provided convinced us.
”
A first quantity of 60 units will be deli-
vered and installed by December 21
st
,
2007 for the official opening of the
Madrid - Barcelona high-speed line.
Another 30 units will be delivered in
early 2008 and the rest of the units
ordered within 2 years.
29%
of all passengers use
self-service kiosks.
This is expected to jump to 50%
by the end of 2008.
